Dry July is well underway now and for those who are participating, kudos to you. I love everything that Dry July stands for and all that it does to help and support those affected by cancer, however I have yet to participate myself. Why? Well despite how it may appear, writing a wine blog and all, I don't actually drink alcohol every single day, but I feel like if I were to try and abstain from consuming wine for an entire month a couple of not-so-nice things might occur. One being that I might make it to the end of the month - woo hoo, 31 days alcohol free and then bam, party time - and I might just find myself over indulging and making up for lost time. Hangovers are definitely not my thing. The second being that if I can't enjoy a sip of my favourite wines for an entire month, I could very well become difficult (or should I say more difficult - haha) to live with and I'd really hate to see my Mr Whine & the Tiny Whinies become homeless for July. I mean, right in the middle of winter - that's just cruel, it's freezing outside.
But, back to those who are participating, I totally applaud you and if you are looking for some delicious beverages to sip on while you complete the challenge, here are some yummy mocktail recipes that will tide you over until you reach your goal.
A classic mocktail that can be enjoyed by everyone and best of all.... it's so simple to make.
1/2 cup of Ginger Ale (or Lemon-Lime Soda)
1/4 cup of Orange Juice
1 tbsp. Grenadine
1 Maraschino Cherry
In a tall glass, add the lemon-lime soda, orange juice and grenadine. Stir well and garnish with the maraschino cherry.
Cuddles on the Beach
This is the virgin version of the well-known Sex on the Beach cocktail. With the vodka removed and the peach schnapps substituted with peach nectar. The taste is so close to the original!
60mls Cranberry Juice
60mls Grapefruit Juice
60mls Peach Nectar
60mls Lemonade (or Sparkling Mineral Water)
Fill a glass with ice, pour all ingredients in and stir.
The Appleini is a non-alcoholic version of the popular Bellini. If you are a champagne lover, like me, then this one is for you.
20ml Peach Puree
90ml Appletiser (chilled)
Optional - Lemon Twist to garnish
Pour peach puree into a chilled champagne flute, top with Appletiser and garnish with a lemon twist.
This delicious, fun, fruity punch is perfect for gatherings and special occasions.
1 Cup Chilled Orange Juice
1 Cup Chilled Apple Juice
2 tbsp. Ginger Beer Cordial
1 tbsp. Chopped Fresh Mint Leaves
4 Strawberries, Hulled & Roughly Chopped
2 Cups Chilled Lemonade
Ice to serve
Combine orange juice, apple juice and cordial in a large bowl. Top with mint, strawberries, lemonade and ice. Stir to combine. Serve.
