One of the main things I have to whine about in my life is money - or lack thereof. No matter how much comes in, well actually it's not much, but it always seems to fly back out the door in the blink of an eye. Grocery bills, mortgage, utilities, rates, school fees/supplies, clothing, petrol, insurance and I haven't even had a wine yet. I stressed a lot less about money before having kids. Maybe because there were less outgoings or maybe because as a parent, you want to be confident you will always be able to make ends meet and provide basic needs plus a little more for your children.
The summer school holidays seem to be the hardest time for us financially, as is the case for many other families. Any extra money we have put aside throughout the year is spent on Christmas gifts and then we have the kids home for six weeks - and they wanna do stuff. That "stuff" always seems to cost a packet. I know there are plenty of activities to do that are either free or low cost - go to the beach, the park, play with the new toys Santa brought etc, but it's also nice to be able to splurge on a couple of activities as well. So what does one do when there's nothing in the 'splurge' budget?
Several years ago, I think around the time Tiny Whiney #2 was born, I decided to take up comping as a hobby. As in entering competitions whether they be online, magazines or by making a purchase somewhere. At first I was just curious to see whether people actually won these giveaways and I dedicated some time each night, when everyone had gone to sleep, to entering some myself. A few weeks later I started receiving deliveries - movie tickets, small appliances and beauty products were arriving. I was hooked. I've won lots of prizes over the years, but unfortunately, I don't have as much time to dedicate to my comping hobby as I use to. That being said, right before Christmas just about every business in existence is promoting themselves with a giveaway. So in hopes of winning a prize or two that can help me out over the Christmas and summer holiday period - I get my comp on. This year it certainly paid off. Thanks to some awesome prize wins I will be able to treat my kids to an hour of arcade games at Timezone, a trip to the movies to see Spies In Disguise, Bowling, Mini Putt Putt and Pizza at Dullboys Social Co and a visit to Hunter Valley Gardens. Yep, I'm stoked and extremely grateful as I will now have less to whine about these holidays - and so will my kids!
Most of the above mentioned prize wins were via Facebook giveaways for local businesses. So if you want to try your luck, make sure you are following your local cinema or other entertainment venues on social media and check regularly for announcements. I also check out competition websites www.competitions.com.au and www.win-free-stuff.com.au regularly, they are great sources for finding all the best giveaways.
